Cast but a glance, not your pearls.
How do I rend my heart
When I’ve only ever given garments?
Far lesser things I might have afforded
If ‘twere not for chastening Divine.
Mourning dove,
covered in ash;
thy bruisings go deep.
O, Steady Hand, go before me,
Severe Mercy, perform your alien work.
When
Despair set low her bolts and bars
She blinded my eyes, thrust me asunder.
My spirit flagged, the flesh gave out.
By taking strength from other gods,
—‘twas Thee I had refused.
Now
I am caught; shorn,
listless from the winds and damp.
These markings where did they come from?
Look away!
“It’s too hard, I must deserve this.”
But ev’n tears are cleansed of boasting
in Thy Presence.
Canst thou hear Me singing?
Peer through the lock,
Thy vigorous captors are no more.
Arise,
Heaven’s flames extinguished, Fury’s quenched at last!
Lift up thine eyes; look about
 ‘It is finished’
See!
—Cerulean skies; the temps are fair.
Thus
As My love, so My scars,
I AM
and ever shall be
Jealous
That My dwelling be found in thee.

  1. “Captivating” I was thinking the same thing and several people used this same word to describe this poem. Elizabeth you have said so much here, it's like looking at a painting for me. I want to come back, walk around a little and take it in again and again. It's like that with Jesus…so many things to marvel at, so many things I know I overlook. Thank so much for sharing your gift of inspiration.

  2. Oh, Elizaabeth! I so hope there is more where this came from. This morning I am blessed to ready this poem by a woman in whose heart the Word of God has been so inscribed. Your reflection on this God who will share His glory with no other or will stop at absolutely nothing was absolutely captivating — from start to finish. Bless you dear sister for writing this.

As My love, so My scars,
    I AM
    and ever shall be
    Jealous
That My dwelling be found in thee.

    Allelujia!

  3. Diana, you have said it well.

Dear E, since I read this I have been thinking how much we need to remind of ourselves of this truth. That our Jesus, our God, is Jealous makes me shiver, and makes me long for my sanctification even more.

Advent is a good time to meditate on His coming, and we know that He came to deliver us from sin, from idolatry, and how many times we are like the Jews who once out of Egypt went back to worship false gods? O that God have mercy on us, and give us and undivided heart!

Love you, sweet friend. I am grateful for the gift you have with words, you bless us all.

  4. It almost feels like posting a comment here is stepping out of the Holy Awe which has descended on us after reading this deeply personal poem which speaks so richly of His Jealousy.

Liz, thank you so much for daring to share this with us. When a God, Whose Name is Jealous, comes after us, it can never be an easy experience, as He removes all other idols and comforts from our lives so that our trust is in Him alone. But when we DO trust Him alone – nothing on earth or heaven can compare.

I thank God He has brought you to Him, and that by doing so, He has given you such a rich understanding and a real knowledge of Him. It is such a blessing to read this poem, to know that He is the answer, He is always the answer. God bless you.
