About Becky Pliego

I am grateful because God, in His grace, called me out of darkness and into his admirable light. When I did not look for Him, He found me. When I was in a pit of sin, He rescued me. I am not walking this road alone, my family is always with me, and we love Him, because He loved us first.

And a Book Goes to…..

Friday has arrived and with it, the news of the winner of the children’s book give-away!

I did not have time to take a picture yesterday to announce the happy winner, so I pulled from my archives, a picture of one of our dogs. She is very pretty and I thought that your children might enjoy looking at her. (By the way, I took this picture two weeks ago, now look at the Fall colors in Mexico!)

Her name is Kima and she sleeps mostly all day; sometimes she is awake, and of course, as you can imagine, she is a pretty good eater.

Kima, then, is our “guest” today and she is happy to announce our winner.

Ready?

Well, the winner of last week’s children’s book give-away is :

Analucia! (Oasis’ daughter)

Congratulations, Analucia! I pray you will be blessed by reading the beautiful story of the Prince’s Poison Cup.

Have a blessed weekend!

Your Word has Caused Me to Hope by Susannah Spurgeon

“Not that we loved God — but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10

As the precious balm of Gilead, or the cassia and sweet calamus of the holy anointing oil — so these blessed words came into my dull and aching heart this morning. Dear Lord, I thank You for them; You have taken them from Your own Book, and spoken them to me with Your living, loving voice — and they have quickened me to love You!

With shame and sorrow, I had brought to You my hard and insensible heart. I could only groan out my utter lack both of faith and feeling before You. The very desire to love You — seemed to lie fettered and powerless within me; only an occasional struggle revealing its bare existence. Then, Lord, while I knelt in Your presence, with bowed head and troubled spirit — tears and sighs my only prayers — and You whispered those sweet words in my ear, and they brought light and liberty to my captive soul! Blessed be Your dear Name for this glorious deliverance!

It is not my poor, cold, half-hearted love — which is to satisfy and comfort me; but Your love — great, and full, and free, and as eternal as Yourself! Surely, I had known this before, Lord; but I had shut myself up in unbelief until, in Your sweet mercy — You spoke the Word which released me from my bonds, opened my prison doors, and led me out into the sunshine of true peace in believing!

“Not that we loved God!” No, and that is the sad wonder and mystery of our unrenewed life, dearest Master. Not to have loved You — is our greatest guilt and shame. It was even worse than this with us, for we were enemies, by wicked works — to Him who claimed the most ardent and grateful love of our souls! We had put ourselves in an attitude of defiance against our best Friend; or if not openly defiant, we were totally forgetful of Him to whom our heart’s allegiance was justly due.

“Not that we loved God!” Ah, dearest Lord, You know how deeply, sadly true this was of me — and how I mourn over the years spent without love to You, and at a distance from You! O hard heart, O blind eyes, O poor, dull, sluggish soul — that could be unmindful of the strivings of God’s Spirit, could deliberately neglect the pleadings of a Savior’s love, and see no beauty in One who is “altogether lovely!”

“But that He loved us!” Here is . . .
a blessed contrast,
the antidote for sin’s sting,
light after darkness,
hope after despair,
life after death!

Lord, my soul flings itself on this glorious fact, this saving truth — as a drowning man seizes upon a life-belt thrown to him in the surging sea! If You do not love me and save me — I must perish forever. But there is no question of sinking — when Jesus saves; no fear of losing life — when He loves.

O my Lord, how I thank You for this precious Word upon which You have caused me to hope! Now, all the day long, my heart shall sing over the safety and blessedness of being freely loved — instead of fretting about the sad lack of my poor love to You.

“Not that we loved God” — is darkness, and bitterness, and eternal destruction!

“That He loved us” — is light and pardon, peace and everlasting life!

On Books and Reading, -Suffering and Affliction-

Marsha left a comment on Monday’s post saying,

“Can you recommend some Bible passage and/or books that would give me a foundation on glorifying Him in the midst of suffering? I am having a difficult time with the question who is the author of suffering, etc.

Thank you for your blog which makes me want to dig deeper.”

Marsha is not the only one struggling with these questions; when afflictions come to our lives, if we are not well grounded in the Word of God, our faith trembles and many times it falls, like a fine piece of China, into thousand pieces to the ground.

I was never taught about afflictions in the Church I grew up. For 20 years I only heard from the pulpit about the joyous, peaceful, and victorious life that we should be enjoying as children of the King. I heard all these years how we should confess to receive, and bind and loose; and claim promises and fight for them. How far I was from the teachings of the Word of God! But God had mercy on me and my family; and he opened our eyes to see and our ears to hear, and 9 years ago we started to really learn what the Bible teaches in many areas including suffering and affliction.

Our Father knew what was ahead of us. Last July we experienced the hardest trial ever, the loss of my sister’s precious baby girl, an infant. The suffering and affliction has been hard to bear, but many years before this event, God starting preparing our hearts to endure the fire that tests our hearts, as we learned to abide daily in His Word, as we grew in prayer, and as we studied about the purpose of why affliction and suffering come to the lives of the Children of God.

So Marsha, you are not alone; and even though I don’t you, nor your trials or afflictions, I pray God will give you a humble heart to receive from Him, not only the sweet providences, but also the bitter ones, knowing that even those proceed from a loving God.

Here are some good books and articles that have been helpful to me and my family; hope you find this list helpful.

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will glory all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. Thanking God for Those Who Endure Trials

Facing fiery trials is part of our Christian life, and yet we must be reminded of Peter’s words very often:

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you” I Peter 4: 12

Today is Gratitude Monday in this blog, and I want to thank the Lord, with tears in my eyes, for my sisters in Christ who are going through trials and are enduring faithfully and patiently. I admire each one of you* and praise God for your faithfulness. You are an example to me and I continually keep you in my prayers.

(#1389- 1396)

Lord, thank you for the hope of your coming. Help us to wait patiently until we see your face.

Thank you for each one of my friends who endure trials with a humble heart.

Thank you, Father, for my sister, who recognizes that even the hardest providences are providences of love.

Thank you for my friend Trisha, who in the midst of many losses, acknowledges that your grace is all sufficient.

Thank you for my friend who is struggling with her health; and at the same time battles against the flesh because she does not want to sin against you in the midst of her trials.

Thank you for friends who are struggling and suffering, but do not raise their voices against you.

Thank you for my sisters in a far away land who suffer persecutions. Lord, have mercy on them. Hear their cry, and help them stand firm.

Thank you for those women, saints who have gone before us and have endured hardships, losses, and trials, but have never denied your name.

Thank you for their example. O how they bless the church when with their works, they show their living faith.

Thank you for ______________, you know her name; Lord. She reads these words of mine today and loves your ways. She is going through a hard and bitter providence but keeps a quiet spirit and a humble heart. Lord, strengthen her faith today and help her to keep her eyes fixed on you.

Humbly, giving thanks…

Becky

*For the sake of prudence I am not mentioning all my sisters in Christ whose trials are many; but you know who you are and how much I love you and pray for you.

Praying the Psalms -Psalm 1-

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

O God, how great you are;
Your love for your own people surpasses all my understanding,
You have called us, Father, out of the darkness and into your light,
You have set our feet on the Way of Life,
and now you bless us for walking on it.
Lord, thank you because your children
do not walk anymore in the counsel of the wicked,
thank you that now they are standing on the Way of Life,
and not in the way of sinners.
Thank you, Father, because we sit no more in the seat of scoffers.
O Father, thank you, because you have transformed our hearts by your grace,
and now we find delight not in the world, but in your Law.
Thank you, because this is not something that we have done,
but you have worked it in us through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Now help us Lord, we pray,
help us not be distracted,
not to fall prey of the snares of the world,
the fears of our heart,
the sorrows of this life,
the prosperity,
and the blessings that come our way,

Help us to mediate with all diligence in your Word day and night.

3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Father, these are wonderful promises for your children,
nothing we desire besides you and yet it has pleased You to give us great promises,
you have promised us that we, those who have been saved by your infinite grace,
will be planted…
planted and not pulled out;
planted by streams of water,
planted in Jesus which is the Living Water.
Than you, because you have promised that we will not have a bare life,
but that we will produce fruit to glorify your name.
Thank you, because even though our physical strength and our health may fall,
in our spirit we will be renewed day after day, and our leaf will not wither.
Thank you that it has pleased you to prosper our way,
to prosper our daily walk with you.
Father, do not let us forget about the wicked who are like chaff,
give us a compassionate heart, so that we may go to them,
and speak to them the Word that can bring them to repentance.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Lord, we intercede today for the wicked among us,
for those who hate your ways but love their sin,
Father, have mercy on them just as you had mercy on us.
My Heavenly Father, I worship you today,
I worship you because you have love me
and clothed me with righteous.
My God,  I can rest assure in this life,
until I see your face in Heaven,
because I have confidence that You, O LORD,
know my ways.
In Jesus’ precious and perfect name, I pray.
Amen.

Becky
