About Becky Pliego

I am grateful because God, in His grace, called me out of darkness and into his admirable light. When I did not look for Him, He found me. When I was in a pit of sin, He rescued me. I am not walking this road alone, my family is always with me, and we love Him, because He loved us first.

>Sunday’s Psalm – Psalm 62-

>

My Soul Waits for God Alone
To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
How long will all of you attack a man;to batter him,
like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse.
                                         Selah
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.
                                          Selah
Those of low estate are but a breath;
those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a breath.
Put no trust in extortion;
set no vain hopes on robbery;
if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
according to his work.

May your Sabbath be full of joy
as you meditate on God’s Word.

>New Year’s Prayers 2011

>

O LORD,

Length of says do not profit me except the days are passed
in thy presence,
in thy service,
to thy glory.
Give me a grace that precedes,
follows,
guides,
sustains,
sanctifies,
aids every hour,
that I may not be one moment apart fro Thee,
but may rely on thy Spirit
to supply every thought,
speak in every word,
direct every step,
prosper every work,
build up every note of faith,
and give me a desire
to show forth thy praise,
testify thy love,
advance thy kingdom.
I launch my bark on the unknown waters of this year,
with Thee, O Father, as my harbour,
thee, O Son, at my helm,
thee, O Holy spirit, filling my sails.
Guide me to heaven with my loins girt,
my lamp burning,
my ear open to thy calls,
my heart full of love,
my soul free.
Give me thy grace to sanctify me,
thy comforts to cheer,
thy wisdom to teach,
thy right hand to guide,
thy counsel to instruct,
thy law to judge,
thy presence to stabilize.
May thy fear be my awe,
thy triumphs my joy.

A Prayer About the New Year and the Gospel

“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:14-15

     Gracious Father, as I sit in my favorite “perch”, sipping fresh coffee and watching flames dance in the fireplace, it’s early into the first day of a new year.
Tons of confetti cover the streets of Manhattan and gratitude fills my heart.
     I’m thankful I’m beginning this year with a little better understanding of the gospel than I had last year… and the previous years.
I’m already praying that I’ll be able to say the same thing this time next year.
For the gospel is not just good news for people getting ready to die.
It’s good news for people who are now ready to live.
     In the gospel you lavish us with your love, liberate us by your grace and launch us into your transforming story of redemption and restoration.
What more could we possibly want or hope for, in life or in death?
     Because the gospel is true, I don’t respond to Joshua’s bold charge with a list of New Year’s resolutions—promises of what I’m going to do for you. Rather, I begin this year resolving to abandon myself to everything Jesus has done for us. Jesus is the promise keeper, not us. He’s the one who has promised to make all things new, including me.
     Father, that’s why serving you is much more than merely “desirable,” it’s the greatest privilege conceivable and the purest delight imaginable.
For Jesus is our Joshua—the one has saved us… is saving us… and one Day will completely save us. Without any embarrassment or fear of cliché, I gladly affirm, JESUS SAVES.
What other savior died for us that we might find life in him?
What other god sacrificially serves us that we might gratefully serve him?
     Because of the gospel, throwing away my idols feels less like a painful sacrifice and more like a liberating dance.
For all my “empty nothings” have ever given me is momentary pleasure and lasting regrets.
Remind me of this all year long when I lose “gospel-sanity,” and am tempted to think otherwise.
     Father, may this be a year of considering our lives worth nothing to us, if only we may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given us—the task of testifying (by word and deed) to the gospel of your grace (Acts 20:24).
So very Amen, we pray, in Jesus’ name, with great anticipation and much thanksgiving.

>Year’s End Prayer

>

O LOVE BEYOND COMPARE,

Thou art good when thou givest,
when thou takes away,
when the sun shines upon me,
when night gathers over me.
Thou hast loved me before the foundation of the world,
and in love didst redeem my soul;
Thou dost love me still,
inspite of my hard heart, ingratitude, distrust.
Thy goodness has been with me during another year,
leading me through a twisting wilderness,
in retreat helping me to asvance,
when beaten back making sure headway.
Thy goodness will be with me in the year ahead;
I hoist sail and draw up anchor,
With Thee as the blessed pilot of my future as of my past.
I bless Thee that thou hast veiled my eyes to the waters ahead.
If Thou hast appointed storms of tribulation,
Thou wilt be with me in them;
If I have to pass through tempests of persecution and temptation,
I shall not drown;
If I am to die,
I shall see thy face sooner;
If a painful end is to be my lot,
grant me grace that my faith fail not;
If I am to be cast aside from the service I love,
I can make no stipulation;
Only glorify thyself in me whether in comfort or trial,
as a chosen vessel meet always for thy use.

The Adoration of the Magi (engraving) by Albrecht Dürer

Just for you to know….

Our Christmas Tree is still up; lights are on and the spirit of Christmas is still hanging in the air. We are still talking about the different events surrounding our Lord’s coming. Every thing will remain like this until the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6th (In the context of the Christian Church, Epiphany has a more specific reference: it celebrates the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. The feast of Epiphany is observed on January sixth, twelve days after Christmas.)  So, yes… I still have one more post under the series “Celebrating the Incarnation of Our Lord” next Wednesday, when, God willing, I will be sharing about the Wise Men visiting our Saviour Jesus Christ.

On Blog Reading… what I want to do this coming year.

I just LOVE to read my friend’s thoughts, your thoughts,  I am always encouraged to hear how the Lord is dealing with each one of us. I am grateful that I have been “reading” many books with you, just by reading your excerpts, quotes and thoughts. Now, I don’t want to miss those grains of wisdom I am gleaning, so I have decided, to read you always with my journal on hand to pour in there what I am learning from you. (I have done it before, but not as a regular habit)

On Kindles…

I am in. Yes. I cannot believe it but I have a Kindle now.  The most surprising thing: I am actually enjoying it!  I even thought on writing a review, but my friend Trisha did an excellent one, so I will invite you to read hers here and please also read this little piece she wrote which really made me laugh. (also about Kindles)

On gifts that take one year to make and thoughts for 2011…

This is a B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. idea that Missy shares with us… a book of quotes, thoughts and ideas, that she made for her husband. I would really want to do that.  You can read more about this here.
She also wrote a thought provoking post about her resolutions for 2011. I encourage you to read this too.

On Memorizing the Word of God…

My Moleskin is ready. I am already working with the first verses of this beautiful and challenging project: Memorizing Philippians “The goal is to memorize the entire book of Philippians by Easter Sunday (April 24, 2011) through partnering with other believers using the memory moleskine.”   You still have time to join us!

On reading together….

I also have my e-book ready to read along with other believers Help Heavenward by Octavius Winslow; Matthew Blair is hosting this Reading Group. maybe you would like to join us too.

A Closing quote from my good friend Elizabeth DeBarros:

“Resolutions scare me for the will-worship required to keep them, but if by some touch of grace I can change, become more like Christ, so help me God”

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends!

Under His sun and by His grace…

>Greeting New Year’s Day

>Today is Thursday of Reformed Quotes; and the words I will share with you here are from the Sermo CXCVIII  by Augustine of Hippo. I have been reading this season Augustine’s Sermons to the People; Advent, Christmas, New Year, Epiphany.

“Now here’s my point. If you don’t believe, hope, love the way the Gentile Pagans do, then you’re no longer one of them. Yes, you do rub shoulders with them every day, but do remember that in mind and spirit you and they live in two very different worlds.

How would I describe these two extremes? Well, the Gentile Pagans believe in many false gods, also known as demons or Daemons or Daimons, while you, the Gentile Christians, believe in the One True God. They hope against hope for the half-lives of this world, while you hope for the eternal life with Christ. They love the artifacts of this world while you love the Artificer of the world as a whole”

“Just put Faith, Hope, and Charity into practice in your daily life, and you’ll see the distance between them and you’ll increase with every passing day…”

“Two observations.
First, the more time you spend with the Gentile Pagans, the less time you’ll have to spend with Him, your Lord and Redeemer.
Second, if you live and love, believe and hope the way the Gentiles do, then you’re an ingrate, ungrateful to your Redeemer, regarding as worthless the horrific price He paid for you; that’s to say, masquerading as the Perfect Lamb, the Perfect Sacrifice.

Two possible courses of action.
Continue to do what the Gentiles do. Or…
Rearrange your schedule to spend more time following your Redeemer, His blood still damp upon your soul. That’s to say, don’t continue to commingle with the Gentile Pagans when it comes to do’s and don’t’s  of the moral life.

They may binge, but you should fast. And today, if you can’t fast, then at least dine in moderation. If you do all these, or indeed any one of these, then you have chanted well those happy words, “Save us, O Lord God of Ours; save us from the fate of the Gentile Pagan Disbelievers.”
