Jesus’ Prayer to the Father

Grace Foretold by Makoto Fujimura

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said,
Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
since you have given him authority over all flesh,
to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
And this is eternal life,
that they know you the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
I glorified you on earth,
having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
And now, Father,
glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you
before the world existed.

 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.
Yours they were,
and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word.
Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
For I have given them the words that you gave me,
and they have received them
and have come to know in truth that I came from you;
and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them.
I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me,
for they are yours.
All mine are yours, and yours are mine,
and I am glorified in them.
And I am no longer in the world,
but they are in the world,
and I am coming to you.
Holy Father,
keep them in your name,
which you have given me,
that they may be one,
 even as we are one.
While I was with them,
I kept them in your name,
which you have given me.
I have guarded them,
and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction,
that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
But now I am coming to you,
and these things I speak in the world,
that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
I have given them your word,
and the world has hated them because they are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.
I do not ask that you take them out of the world,
but that you keep them from the evil one.
They are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them in the truth;
your word is truth.
As you sent me into the world,
so I have sent them into the world.
And for their sake I consecrate myself,
that they also may be sanctified in truth.

“I do not ask for these only,
but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
that they may all be one,
just as you,
Father, are in me,
and I in you,
that they also may be in us,
so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
The glory that you have given me I have given to them,
that they may be one even as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may become perfectly one,
so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
Father, I desire that they also,
whom you have given me, may be with me where I am,
to see my glory that you have given me
because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
O Righteous Father,
even though the world does not know you,
I know you, and these know that you have sent me.
I made known to them your name,
and I will continue to make it known,
that the love with which you have loved me may be in them,
and I in them.”
 John 17:1-26

Father, O Righteous and Holy Father, I thank you for Jesus, for his prayers, for his unceasing intercession for us.

I love you, Abba Father.

Amen.

Praying the Psalms -Psalm 77-

I cry aloud to God,
aloud to God, and he will hear me.
In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
in the night my hand is stretched out
without wearying;
my soul refuses to be comforted.
When I remember God, I moan;
when I meditate, my spirit faints.
Selah

You hold my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
I consider the days of old,
the years long ago.
I said, “Let me remember my song
in the night;
let me meditate in my heart.”
Then my spirit made a diligent search:
“Will the Lord spurn forever,
and never again be favorable?
Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
Are his promises at an end for all time?
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he in anger shut up his compassion?”
Selah

Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
to the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.
Your way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?
You are the God who works wonders;
you have made known your might among the peoples.
You with your arm redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph.
Selah

When the waters saw you, O God,
when the waters saw you, they were
afraid;
indeed, the deep trembled.
The clouds poured out water;
the skies gave forth thunder;
your arrows flashed on every side.
The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
your lightnings lighted up the world;
the earth trembled and shook.
Your way was through the sea,
your path through the great waters;
yet your footprints were unseen.
You led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Father in Heaven, there are times when some memories hunt me at night, times in which my soul grows weary to the point of refusing to be comforted. Some days as I lie on my bed, I remember and the pain pierces me still. I cannot speak, Father, in times like those I don’t know what to say, how to pray. I just ask questions in my heart, my face hidden in the pillow.

But you O God, always Merciful to your own, visit me at night. You remind me of all your goodness and steadfast love. You comfort me in the middle of those hard nights, and when the sobs are quieted, and I start to see more clearly, I only have eyes to see your mercies.

And as I open my eyes, I say,

I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.
Your way, O God, is holy.
What god is great like our God?
You are the God who works wonders;
you have made known your might among the peoples.
You with your arm redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph.

Yes, Lord, yes. I want to remember this. Help me not to forget! How you have worked wonders in my life even through the hardest providences. How the sins of my youth broke me in pieces and then you pulled all those pieces together and made me whole again. Who else could do something like that? There is no other one like You!

I will remember how it pleased you to made your ways known to me. O how you stretched your arms on the cross to redeem me!

When the waters that were trying to drawn me saw you, they feared you and retreated. In the midst of the hardest trials, You were there. I could not see your arrows going against my enemies because I was hidden under your wings. I couldn’t see beyond my pain and fears but you never left me. O God, my Shepherd, you have led me through all those hard trials to a place of quiet, a place of green pastures. I am grateful, so grateful, God.

Let me drink and eat from you now that the waters are low and the sky is clear blue, so that I will be prepared for the next storm. Let my heart be strengthen in you. Let me be established in your Word. Let me never forget that You alone are the God who works wonders.

Father, I love  you. I love you, Oh God of my Salvation.

Amen

Praying the Psalms -Psalm 23: 4- A Prayer for Moms in Pain-

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
Lord, my Good Shepherd,
Help me remember that all those
Terrible and fearsome shadows
That hunt us in our Christian walk,
Are only shadows.
Help me remember that
Even death is a shadow,
Death has been conquered
Through Jesus’ death and
Resurrection.
Death doesn’t have the last word.
You do.
And you have promised Life,
eternal Life and the resurrection of the death.
Father, I pray you comfort today,
With your rod and staff,
All those moms who have
Lost a dearest child,
Or are barren.
Father help your daughters
Walk in light,
And not fear the shadows of this world.
Let them be comforted in the shadows,
Let your Word strengthen their hope,
Let your Word be a lamp to their feet.
May your Spirit comfort them today.
Thank you for your promise,
The promise that He will come to
be with us and not leave us.
We believe it.
Let your light, O God,
Shine through the darkness,
Through the shadows.
Help us fix our eyes on
What is to come.
Strengthen our faith,
our knees, our heart.
That we won’t lose hope.
 Amen

Sunday Psalm, a Psalm to Sing -Psalm 46-

Covenant blessings are not meant to be looked at only, but to be appropriated. Even our Lord Jesus is given to us for our present use. Believer, thou dost not make use of Christ as thou oughtest to do.

When thou art in trouble, why dost thou not tell Him all thy grief? Has He not a sympathizing heart, and can He not comfort and relieve thee? No, thou art going about to all thy friends, save thy best Friend, and telling thy tale everywhere except into the bosom of thy Lord.

Art thou burdened with this day’s sins? Here is a fountain filled with blood: use it, saint, use it.

Has a sense of guilt returned upon thee? The pardoning grace of Jesus may be proved again and again. Come to Him at once for cleansing.

Dost thou deplore thy weakness? He is thy strength: why not lean upon Him?

Dost thou feel naked? Come hither, soul; put on the robe of Jesus’ righteousness. Stand not looking at it, but wear it. Strip off thine own righteousness, and thine own fears too: put on the fair white linen, for it was meant to wear.

Dost thou feel thyself sick? Pull the night-bell of prayer, and call up the Beloved Physician! He will give the cordial that will revive thee. Thou art poor, but then thou hast “a kinsman, a mighty man of wealth.” What! wilt thou not go to Him, and ask Him to give thee of His abundance, when He has given thee this promise, that thou shalt be joint heir with Him, and has made over all that He is and all that He has to be thine?

There is nothing Christ dislikes more than for His people to make a show-thing of Him, and not to use Him. He loves to be employed by us. The more burdens we put on His shoulders, the more precious will He be to us.

“Let us be simple with Him, then,
Not backward, stiff, or cold,
As though our Bethlehem could be
What Sinai was of old.”

C.H. Spurgeon

Praying the Psalms -Psalm 15-

Psalm 15

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

He who walks blamelessly
and does what is right
and speaks truth in his heart;
who does not slander with his tongue;
and does no evil to his neighbor,
nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
in whose eyes a vile person is despised,
but who honors those who fear the Lord;
who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent.

He who does these things shall never be moved.

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

You know my ways, O Lord,
You know that I am not blameless.
You know my heart and discern my thoughts.
How I have sinned against you,
when many, many times I don’t do
what I know is right;
What you have demanded from me.
My sins of omission are many, O Lord.

From my mouth not only sweet water drips,
but bitter one, like the one in Marah;
water that doesn’t heal but brings death.
My words do not always build those whom I love,
many times with my words I them bring down.
The words of my mouth are a fire;
a world of unrighteousness.
They stain my whole body,
and set on fire the entire course of my life.
So hard to tame this tongue,
this small member who boasts of great things.

The thoughts of my heart are not always according to Truth;
I sin when I entertain thoughts that encourage
fear and doubts.
I sin when I set my mind on earthly things;
when I think on what is not honorable,
on what is unjust,
when my thoughts are not on the things that are pure,
when my my mind is busy thinking on all those things
that are not driven by love,
that are not excellent,
and not worthy of praise.

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

I like to tell myself that I do not evil to my neighbor,
but in my omission,
in my passing by and not stretching my hand out towards her,
in my neglecting him,
am I not sinning?
Am I not guilty of not doing evil against him,
when I remain blind to his needs?

O Lord, so many friends you have given me,
and I am not always a godly influence.
I do not always pray fervently for them,
I do not always give them wise words.
I do not always love them without reproach.

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

Father, I have said that I honor those who fear you,
but have forgotten what someone just reminded me,
that “honor must start in the heart, but if it ends there,
it isn’t honor.
Honor must be expressed through words,
symbols, actions, or gestures.
Honor is among the most incarnational of the virtues.
It must have feet and hands.”

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

O God, I hold tight to the anchor of my life,
to the Word of Life,
and yet hard winds come,
and temptations arise against me,
and I do not always remain unchanged,
unmoved;
the seams of my robe are torn,
and I feel undone; not longer of one piece.

He who does these things shall never be moved.

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

But God, even though I am a broken vessel,
I will sojourn in your tent.
I will dwell on your holy hill.
Not because of my deeds which are filthy,
but because of my Jesus,
my Savior,
my Redeemer.

He has done all these things.
He shall never be moved.
It has pleased Him to forgive me,
and call me his own.

He  took the penalty of my sins,
my guilt he bore on the cross.
His righteousness is my mine.
In my place He stood,
and now I live.

O Father,
to be able to call you Father!

Thank you for Jesus,
for the forgiveness of my sins,
and the hope of eternal life.

Amen
