Celebrating the Bounty of God’s Providence

Starting a week taking the time to celebrate the bounty of God’s providence is, without a doubt, a blessing because we start looking not to the things, that in God’s providence, we don’t have, but to the blessings that He has already bestowed upon us; and doing so we fight discontentment.

Let us remember that the best remedy against an unhappy, discontent heart is a grateful heart. One that has learned to sing gratitude songs even in the dark hour, one that is grateful for the earthly blessings and yet, does not love the world or the things of the world more than the Lord Himself.(I John 2: 15)

Richard Baxter wrote,

“We need to guard our lives against the love of riches and worldly cares. All love for earthly goods, however, is not a sin. Their sweetness is a drop of his love and they have his goodness imprinted of them. They kindle our love for Him as love tokens from our dearest friend. Loving them, is a duty, not a sin. Earthly blessings are the means of sustaining our bodies and preserving our life and health, as we do God the service we owe him on the world on our journey to heaven.”

Today I celebrate the bounty of God’s providence,  who has blessed our lives this week with… (#1375- 1388)

The joy of our salvation.

Food to nurture our bodies.

Skype sessions that have gladdened our days.

The ability to teach and to learn.

My girl, playing and jumping with a big smile, and (finally) being able to ride her bike! (just look at her so happy here)

Time to lift my feet up watching a beautiful sky!

Flowers that remind us that God dresses us more beautifully than them: even with a robe of righteousness.

Days of  productive work in our school

Yummy breakfasts on Monday

Love that is shown in prayers.

The body of Christ, a support in difficult times.

Grace that opens a way for us to come before the throne of God to intercede for those hurting.

The Word of God that never changes

Marriages that last.

Let us celebrate His goodness and the bounty of His providence today and praise his Name for only He is worthy to be praised.

Food: A Gift from Above

A feast to the eyes,  a joy to share, a good gift from Above: Food.

Isn’t it amazing all that happens around food?  It is wonderful to consider all the goodness that comes when we feast together around the table and share God’s goodness, God’s bounty, His mercy to us as we come together and share a meal.

I want to give thanks today to my God for our family and for all our friends (old and new) who have opened their homes, their kitchen to us; for each family that has welcomed ours around their table. Thank you!

Coffee and fruit, and blueberry coffee cake; zucchini bread early in the morning and fresh hand picked cherries, burgers and  ice-cream and homemade pizzas. My mom’s best dishes,  and my sister’s best pic-nic food. All good, all a gift, each one a joy to share!

And we bow our heads each time, and hold hands and give thanks to our God who gives, and gives, and gives… because there is simply no other way to fully enjoy a meal but with a grateful heart. We give thanks to Him three times a day around the table not because of an empty custom, but because our hearts overflow with thanksgiving. Every meal is a gift, and every meal reminds us that one day, we will feast around a table in Heaven with Him and with all the saints who have gone before us.

Next time you look for a new recipe and prepare a dish for your family, for your friends; next time you set the table, do it with a joyful heart, remembering that every time we come to the table, we come to feast, to celebrate God’s goodness and His never-ending mercies toward us; let us do it pretty, delicious, and joyfully.

Let us bow down, hold hands, give thanks and feast!

An Address to God before a Meal.

O Lord our God, in thee we live, and move, and have our being, and from thee receive all supports and comforts of our being: Thou spreadest our table and fillest our cup and comfortest us with the gifts of thy bounty from day to day. We own our dependence upon thee and our obligations to thee, pardon our sins we pray thee; sanctify thy good creatures to our use, and give us grace to receive them soberly and thankfully, and to eat and drink not to ourselves, but to thy glory, through Jesus Christ our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

An Address to God after a Meal.

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with his benefits and gives us all things richly to enjoy, though we serve him but poorly. O Lord, we thank thee for present refreshments in the use of thy good creatures, and for thy love to our souls in Jesus Christ, which sweetens all. We pray thee pardon our sins, go on to do us good, provide for the poor that are destitute of daily food, fit us for thy whole will, and be our God and guide and portion for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Gratitude Monday

“It is a pity that our tears on account of our troubles should so blind our eyes that we should not see our mercies.” – John Flavel

#1301- 1371

I am grateful because through these past weeks, God has kept our eyes open to see His mercies; and this mercy is on the top of my list because being able to see Him and give Him thanks at all times, in all seasons, is not “natural”, it is the work of the Spirit in us.

I thank the Lord for my sister’s health, and her quick recovery.

For provision to visit her and her family.

For the body of Christ that knows no boundaries and has been interceding for us; for our brothers and sisters that have cried with us.

For the hope that we have in the Lord and in the resurrection.

For technology that help us to stay very close with those we love so much.

For children’s laughter.

For my sister’s faith in the Lord.

Knowing that God sustains us through the darkest valley.

For the Grace that He gives us day by day to endure moment after moment.

Books written to help us during the trials.

For my husband; I can never thank God enough for Him.

I am so grateful for our son Santiago, for all the days, the hours, the minutes we have spent together.

For the invaluable gift of seeing him grow fearing the Lord and honoring His Word.

For the days ahead; knowing that God will be with our son as he goes to college is what makes us smile at the future.

For our church family.

These words full of truth:

“Christian contentment is that sweet,
inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit,
which freely submits to and delights in
God’s wise and fatherly disposal in
every condition.”   Jeremiah Burroughs

“From the bottom of my heart I pity that man who never reads his Bible. I wonder whence he expects to draw his consolation by-and-by. I do implore him to change his plan—and to change it without delay!…

The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit, is the only treasury of consolation. Without it we have nothing to depend on; “our feet will slide in due time” (Deut. 32:35). With it we are like those who stand on a rock. That man is ready for anything—who has got a firm hold of God’s promises. Once more, then, I say to every reader, arm yourself with a thorough knowledge of God’s Word. Read it, and be able to say, “I have hope, because it is thus and thus written! I am not afraid, because it is thus and thus written!” Happy is that soul who can say with Job, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth—more than my necessary food! (Job 23. 12)”   J.C. Ryle

“The Lord is my helper—and I will not fear.”

>I am Grateful for Temporal Blessings

>The days we spent on the beach last week were a blessing; just sitting early every morning by the ocean listening it roar, and seeing the skies proclaiming God’s glory was enough to want to stay just one more day…

While being there we read in our family devotions what Ezekiel Hopkins said about temporal blessings:

“Spiritual things are our greatest need, but God also allows us temporal blessings. We enjoy them as we might enjoy a visit to an inn. We refresh ourselves with the comforts there, but we must not remain there or seek our true rest from it. We are strangers and pilgrims upon earth; heaven is our country, and to there we are traveling. We are thankful for the world’s provisions during our journey, and we enjoy the bread we pray for a support in our passage home.  Our Saviour, in his providence, gives us heavenly blessings as a happy addition to the earthly blessings he daily bestows upon us… Whatever you enjoy is from his free bounty. He spreads your table and fills your cup. He is your health and strength, and he loads you daily with benefits. Do you have riches, honour friends, joy, and comfort? It is God who fills you with these good things. He is the great Lord and proprietor who brings forth abundantly from all his stores for the use and service man.”

One bucket, sand and shovels… time to build castles.

All different blues in the sky

My companion through the Psalms this summer.

The epistle of James: A book to live.

A safe travel back home

More friends coming in today.

And you, what are those temporal blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon you? What are you grateful for this day?

>A Prayer for my Husband and a Giveaway

>

He is my man, I love him and I praise God for giving me to him, and for giving him to me. His embrace is all I want, and being with him is a gift from the Lord.

Today I am specially grateful for my man, and for the privilege God has given me to intercede for him every day. He goes to the world every day,  and faces thorns and whistles and fights for us, while I wait in the quiet of our home, longing for his coming at night.

This is my prayer for my husband today. (adapted from Prayers of an Excellent Wife  -p.68- 69)

O thou Giving God,
Be gracious to my husband today, for to you do I cry all the day. Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up his soul.

Teach him Your way that he might walk in Your truth; unite his heart to fear Your Name. Turn to him and be gracious to him; give him strength, and save him.

O beloved, sing with me of the steadfast love of the LORD forever; with your mouth make know his faithfulness to all generations!

Glorious God,

Let your favor be upon my husband. Establish the work of his hands.

Be his dwelling place, Most High, and be his refuge, so that no evil shall be allowed to befall him. Command Your angels concerning him to guard him in all his ways. Because You hold fast to him in love, please deliver him; protect him because he knows Your Name.

When he calls to You answer him; be with him in trouble; rescue him and honor him. With long life satisfy him, and show him Your salvation. Satisfy him with your beauty.

In the name of my Lord and Mediator Jesus, whose name is above all other names,

Amen

>Being Specific in our Gratitude – Why it Matters-

>

Stones of Diverse Paths

What a wonderful thing it is to continue, after the Lord’s Day, praising God for all His benefits and graces!

It is my joy to share with you what the Lord has been doing here, in me, with me, around my family and friends; so that you may be moved too, to praise Him, and see His hand even in those little things that happen in our lives, and make our days, our life.

I have learned that being specific on my gratitude towards God, helps me grow in contentment. It is definitely, much easier to say “Thank you, Lord for all you give me”; than “Thank you, Lord for this and this, and this, and that…” And the same happens with our confession of sin, it is easier to say, “Lord, forgive all the sins that I have committed today”, than to stop and take the time to search my heart and lay it open before God and say, “Lord, forgive for me for this, and that, and this thing that I should have done and I didn’t…”

Another important thing I have learned, is that we are so “physical” oriented, so bound to all the things on earth, that if we are to grow in contentment, we must raise our eyes beyond the things that we enjoy in this world, and not only give thanks for them, but also for all the spiritual graces that we enjoy. It is, when we give thanks to our Heavenly Father, for all those spiritual graces, that our gratitude looks different than that of the unbelievers who are also trying to live in gratitude.

Today I am grateful, my heart is overflowing with gratitude because…

#1269- 1280

He has given me faith. And as the Puritan prayer reads, so I pray today:

“My God
I bless thee that thou hast given me the eye of faith,
to see thee as a Father,
to know thee as a covenant God,
to experience thy love planted in me…

Be pleased to live and move within me,
breathing in my prayers,
inhabiting my praises,
speaking in my words,
moving in my actions,
living in my life,
causing me to grow in grace”

I am grateful because I can read my Bible. I can feed my soul with the bread of life, and drink from the Word to satisfy my thirst.

I am grateful that the Lord is helping me to memorize the epistle of James; and for all the practical, day-to-day challenges to live the Christian life found in this epistle.

I am grateful for my friend, Elizabeth Hankins. The Lord has brought our paths together to encourage one another to memorize, meditate, and study the Word of God. You are a precious gift to me!

I am grateful, for my sons, see them playing, laughing, spending hours together is nothing else than the grace of God working in our family.

I am grateful for my daughters, their sweet spirit, and gentle heart blesses my soul every day.

I am so grateful for the gift of a new life! A baby, all complete, still in her mom’s womb is getting ready to be borned in a covenant family. It blesses my heart! The prayers, expectations, all the joys, the tiny clothes, and the big brothers awaiting with a heart full of love. Those are blessings from our Heavenly Father!

I am grateful for all the summer plans ahead of us; but mostly, because we can rest knowing that God holds our times in His hand and He knows the longings of our hearts. To be able to rest in His Divine Providence is a gift of grace.

I am grateful for my son, who is willing to laugh with me and have fun with mom, as I took a series of pictures of him tasting a bacon and dark chocolate bar. Just wonderful memories!

I am grateful for my son’s  friend visiting our family for a month. What a joy to share our home with this godly young man!

I am grateful for this day, for the errands, and the provision to buy all we need at home. His faithfulness never fails.

Praising God with you today.
